The annual gift wrapping inspiration post is here full of muslin, raw silk ribbons, bits of nature, handmade Japanese paper, and thoughts about the most important person on my list, my husband + a giveaway (details below!) of an HP Spectre x360 laptop to celebrate it all! Fact: I’m actually a lousy gift giver. All I can ever think of is what I’d want myself; I still haven’t wrapped my head around the fact that a lot of people on my Christmas list don’t know what to do with homemade balsam fir syrup or preserved lemons nor do they want to figure it out. This year I’m aiming to up my gifting, not only with the wrap, but with what’s inside.
I’ve collaborated with HP for their #ReinventGifting initiative—a project about finding the perfect gift for someone important in your life & exploring that relationship. That person is, no contest, my husband, and that gift is the HP Spectre x360. We live together, work together, raise our daughter together—and we use computers in all of that. For being that intertwined, interestingly, we haven’t even known each other for two years. I know right.
It sounds mad. But I can’t imagine life without him—how quickly everything before him faded away. Sometimes I wonder how it is that we don’t share the same memories. When I’m talking about childhood or high school or college or my twenties I forget that I’m divulging new information. He’s so deeply woven into the fabric of my being, it seems he’s most certainly always been there. And maybe he was. I was unapologetically in love with him from the day I met him. Love at first sight. Or first text message at least. I knew he was all I wanted in an instant. Within 4 months we were getting engaged on the Croatian seaside, and not a few month after that we were married in Iceland. Less than 6 months later, I was pregnant with our daughter. She’s now 4 months old. It feels like a metropolis that was built over night—a massive edifice erected while I glanced away. There aren’t enough similes in the world to say what it’s like, it’s like, it’s like.
I can’t say what it’s like. I can only say what it is. It’s needing another person as much as you need sleep, air, water. It’s being weaker than you’ve ever been in your whole life because that need is there. It’s having everything to lose. It’s never being lonely. It’s the perfect smell, angle, smile. It’s waking up in the middle of the night unable to sleep because your heart is beating for them, wanting to hold them close, but not wanting to mess up a perfectly good night’s sleep so you lie still. I would have never imagined in a million years I’d end up with a man like my husband. He’s far too handsome, smart, and silly.
So like I said, we do everything together. Work, family, travel, life. Computers are, obviously, the unsung heroes of all the we do. You’re reading this on one; I’m writing it on one. Matt has been looking for something versatile for our family life—for cooking in the kitchen together, for watching movies on the airplane together. So Christmas came early this year, and I gifted him the HP Spectre 360—one part touch screen tablet, one part laptop. It’s like if his phone & laptop had a baby. It’s awesome. We broke it by watching 1980’s Christmas classics on it with Eula before using it in the kitchen to cook dinner together (no, I don’t know all of my own recipes by heart…haha.) I think he’s probably (mostly) going to use it to watch Star Wars 1 million times. But you know, I like to think it will see some other uses too…
